Hope and Crosby both emerged from vaudeville, and their movie collaborations were extensions of that tradition, featuring a little patter, a little dance and comedy. They met at the Friar's Club in New York. The two would meet again on the Paramount lot in Hollywood in 1937. They decided to perform together at a benefit held at the Del Mar Racetrack. As the legend goes, some studio executives in attendance took notice of the duo's synergy and made plans to team them up in their own motion picture. When Hope and Crosby were together, they played themselves, more or less. The character names changed from picture to picture, but they nearly always started out as fast-talking song-and-dance men, who never took even the direst life-or-death situation too seriously. Avoiding arranged marriages, shipping heir Bing Crosby (as Joshua "Josh" Mallon) and carefree pal Bob Hope (as "Ace" Lannigan) run away to Singapore. They swear off work and women. At the turn of the century, Duke and Chester, two vaudeville performers, go to Alaska to make their fortune. On the ship to Skagway, they find a map to a secret gold mine, which had been stolen by McGurk and Sperry, a couple of thugs. They disguise themselves as McGurk and Sperry to get off the ship. Meanwhile, Sal Van Hoyden is in Alaska to try and recover the map; it had been her father's. She falls in with Ace Larson, who wants to steal the gold mine for himself. Duke and Chester, McGurk and Sperry, Ace and his henchmen, and Sal, chase each other all over the countryside, trying to get the map. Have you seen "The Road to Utopia"?
