Movies
As mentioned in my last installment of this running series, not all musicals originate as the theater type, but as movies. One thing I find fun about this format is the ability to expand the scope visually beyond what's possible within the frame of a stage. In any case, below four below for your consideration...

Absolute Beginners - Based on a novel by Colin MacInnes about life in late 1950's London. The music, mix of people, social issues and those with their own plans. In this surreal scene, Eddie O'Connell is Colin, a photographer who finds himself pulled in by the words of Vendice Partners (David Bowie). Ever found yourself tempted by one of the 'Seven Deadly Sins'?

Phantom of the Paradise - this was written and directed by Brian De Palma, later known for Scarface, The Untouchables and others. Paul Williams is Swan stealing the music of Winslow Leach (William Finley) for a venue called The Paradise. Inspired by Phantom of the Opera, Faust, and The Picture of Dorian Gray. Ever felt something you came up with was stolen from you in some way?

Across the Universe - this one by Julie Taymor uses tunes by The Beatles. Characters are named after ones mentioned in their songs (Lucy and Jude our main pair). Set in the 60's, it delves into the social and political elements of the time. Were you in the Viet Nam war or know anyone who was?

The Greatest Showman - loosely based on the life of P.T. Barnum, Hugh Jackman stars as the man himself. In this scene he proposes a deal with Phillip Carlyle (Zac Afron) who in real life would have been James Anthony Bailey. Not sure how the deal was actually made, but like the lyrics, dance, and how the guys are doing shots though this. Have you ever been talked into an agreement you didn't think best at first?
