Renowned soprano Charity Sunshine Tillemann-Dick performed a monumental concert last October, after she received transplanted lungs in an operation five years before. It was not her first performance; in fact she performed mere months after receiving the transplant. But this concert was special -- performing alongside her was Esperanza Tufani, a 24-year-old restaurant manager in Ohio. Tufani's mother was the donor for Tillemann-Dick's lungs. She was diagnosed with advanced idiopathic pulmonary hypertension, a rare and potentially fatal condition that affects the heart and lungs, several years after she achieved notoriety in the opera world. After years of deteriorating health and even failed transplants, she finally had the operation that gave her back her career.
