i've long held that parents, at least Christian ones, would do well to forego feeding their children the mythology of the supposedly omniscient Santa Claus and stick to telling their kiddos of the One for whom Christmas is named. Even if you disagree with that perspective, you may still agree that bursting the baloom on Kris Kringle's existence has resulted in some worthwhile music. Here's a survey about some of it.

The first musical chink in scrutiny over Santa was arguably Little Jimmy Boyd's 1952 smash, "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus." Boyd's version is a bit too rich for me, so here's the 1976 reggae-inflected remake by new wave singer-to-be Lene Lovich. Do you enjoy either rendition?

Ray Davies outright says he knew his dad played Santa and adds some U.K. class commentary, as often was his lyrical wont, in The Kinks' 1977 sihgle, "Father Christmas," presented here in its original music video. Whether or not you're OK with youngsters believing in The Jolly Old Elf, is this song OK by you?
