The same rules apply to this survey series as those for my previous series (loosely) about one-hit U.S. pop singles chart wonder wonders. I'm asking-sorta'-about acts that have had only one single to crack the top 40 of U.S. music business trade magazine Billboard's pop singles chart from 1955-2010.

Z: Warren Zevon. He wrote hits for others, such as The Turtles and Linda Ronstadt, but the only one he penned for himself is 1978's "Werewolves of London," It only cracked the mid-20's nationally, but it remains likely the most giddily gruesome song in anything approaching regular rotation on classic rock radio. Would you be scared of a real werewolf?
Yes!

Y: The Youngbloods-Led by singer/songwriter Jesse Colin Young, they had their top five moment of chart glory, the majestically ethereal folk rocker "Get Together," in 1969 after it had been recorded by multiple acts- including The Staple Singers, The Jefferson Airplane and The Kingston Trio-and on its second release (first peaking in the lower 60's in '67) after The National Conference of Christians and Jews used it in a TV public service announcement. Do you get on well with (other) Christians and Jews?

W: Tammy Wynette-Though she had country chatr #1's in the double digits, her only time in the pop top 40 was with a song that became a lightning rod for myriad controversies. Still, Wynette's "Stand By Your Man," which dented the top 20 in 1969, remains an exemplary performance of controlled intensity. If you're a woman with a husband or boyfriend, do you stand by him?

V: The Vengaboys- Only half of them are boys, say the "v" with the fuzzy "b" sound common to Spanish, and expect purposefully, relentlessly escapist post-rave Eurodance when you enter the sonic domain of this foursome assembled by Netherlander producers. U.S. pop listeners seemed to have only so much use for their kind of thing in 1999 but enough for the 'Boys' "We Like To Party (The Vegabus)" to reach the mid-20's that year. Have you ever partied on a bus or taken one to a party?

U: Underground Sunshine-Beatles aficionados who wanted them to release one of the sillier songs on their self-titled 1968 album (The White Album, if one must) as a single were either grateful or less charitable to this co-ed Montello, Wisconsin quartet who took "Birthday" to the lower 20's in '69. They only lasted long enough to record one album, but good on them for getting in on action Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr didn't AND having one of the goofiest band names of their era. Have you any friends with whom you share a birthday?
