John Denver - born Henry John Deutschendorf Jr. (December 31, 1943–October 12, 1997), was an American singer and songwriter. He is known for popularizing acoustic folk music in the 1970's and was one of its best-selling artists. He recorded and performed primarily with an acoustic guitar and sang about his joy in nature, disdain for city life, enthusiasm for music, and relationship trials. John Denver died on October 12, 1997 when the two seater plane he was piloting crashed into Monterey Bay near Pacific Grove, California. He was the only occupant. He was 53.

Rocky Mountain High (John Denver/Mike Taylor). Released October 30, 1972 from the album Rocky Mountain High. This song is about self discovery and how he first discovered the euphoria and the peaceful majestic beauty of the Colorado Rocky Mountains. It was inspired by the Perseid Meteor Shower which happens every August - that's where the lyric "I've seen it raining fire in the sky" comes from. To me, this is a lyrically beautiful song in the way it conveys its messages and imagery and fits perfectly with the melody. "I know he'd be a poorer man if he never saw an eagle fly....". Follow Me (John Denver). Released in 1970 from the album Take Me To Tomorrow. He tells a story of wanting to build a life together and not wanting to be alone. "You see I'd like to share my life with you, And show you things I've seen, Places that I'm going to, places where I've been, To have you there beside me and never be alone, And all the time that you're with me, We will be at home". Goodbye Again (John Denver). Released September 15, 1972 from the album Rocky Mountain High. Another introspective song. Is this the beginning of the end of a relationship? It tells the story of a singer who makes his living by travelling on the road. He is torn between hurting his wife when he leaves and his career that he also loves. "I have to go and see some friends of mine, some that I don't know, Some who aren't familiar with my name, It's something that's inside of me, not hard to understand, It's anyone who'll listen to me sing". Rhymes and Reasons (John Denver). Released October 1969 from the album Rhymes and Reasons. I can hear the beginnings of the melody for Rocky Mountain High in this song. He sings about cities crumbling and towers falling, the innocence and wisdom of children and being led to the mountains. The song ends with a positive message: "And the song that l am singing is a prayer to non believers, come and stand beside us we can find a better way". Do you know this song?
