This is my first in a possible series of surveys on the subject of classical music that has been adopted into popular tunes. This one is about tunes from Russian classical music.

Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony is one of his most popular and well loved compositions. The slow movement contains a beautiful romantic horn solo. This was adopted back in the 30's by Glenn Miller (vocals by Ray Eberle) as "Moon Love." Are these familiar?

Alexander Borodin had a dual career as both an accomplished chemist and a composer. Not only did he write some lovely tunes, but an entire musical, "Kismet," was based on his compositions. For example, the song "Baubles, Bangles and Beads" was taken from a string quartet and the song "Sands of Time" from his short tone poem "In the Steppes of Central Asia." But the hit tune from the show was "Stranger in Paradise," based on the ballet section, "Polovtsian Dances," from his opera, Prince Igor. Are you familiar with either of these?

Eric Carmen's "All By Myself," is based on the slow movement of Sergei Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2, perhaps his most famous and popular composition. Rachmaninoff was perhaps one of the last composers that can be considered as belonging to the Romantic Period. Here it is covered by Celine Dion. Which of these are familiar?

Sting's song "Russians" adopts from the romance theme from Serge Prokofiev's film score, Lieutenant Kije. The score was later arranged as an orchestral suite. The satirical movie concerns the inadvertent creation and "life" of Lieutenant Kije, who doesn't actually exist. The troika section of the film is also well known and was used in several pop pieces. Do you know either of these?
