Instead of attempting to describe the nature of music made by this apparently defunct Berkeley, California band who were active from the mid-1980's to the late 2000's, here's a description of what they do from the group's Bandcamp.com page, where several of their albums may yet be purchased on LP, CD, and download... Caroliner, a black light augmented, go to the grave alive and pump lightning band, was formed in order to portray the cabin fever and ergot poisoned hallucinations of early America, namely the 1800s. These tales of steam boiler explosions and tickwater pyrexia are channeled thru the lips of the nationally famous, caroling, traveling bull.

Do you find it peculiar, as do I, that every variation of the band's name listed above included he word "Rainbow," yet their official, shortest name--one they used for several releases--was simply Caroliner?

If you've listened to any of the music included with these questions so far and came to the conclusion that Caroliner were uninterested in the mass exposure of their artistry via any kind of set, commercial radio format, at least to my mind, this impression is bolstered by the nature of most of their physically issued output. Many of their albums and other releases initially were in strictly limited-edition pressings in packaging with handmade artwork. It was the thick, LP box set-looking container for their first album, Rear End Hernia Puppet Show, along with the recommendation of of a record shop owner who hand a decent handle on my range of musical tastes at the time, that persuaded me to give Caroliner a go. Have you ever purchased music based, at least in part, on its packaging?

On the basis of the performance clips I've included with these questions, I get the impression that Caroliner's costumes could appeal to children who enjoy scary things, but the discordant nature of their music (which, no kidding, on the albums of theirs I have betrays some bluegrass and other folky influences) might be more off-putting. Not that any of us here is a child, but from what you've experienced of the band here and maybe in your past, what's your overall impression of Caroliner?
