Bat Out of Hell (1977) is the debut album of rock singer Michael Lee Aday, known professionally as Meat Loaf (1947 -2002). All tracks are by composer Jim Steinman. Oddly enough, this was originally intended to be a rock musical, and actually became one in 2017...

Peter Pan?! The vision was a futuristic rock version of Peter Pan called 'Neverland' Steinman wrote for a 1974 music workshop. (Loaf describes him as "one weird dude" in his VH1 Storytellers CD). It got 'performed' at the Kennedy Center Music Theatre Lab with the premise and only three songs at that point. Ever known a person you felt a bit weird / strange, but brilliant in some way?

The cover - The cover art is by Richard Corben, best known for his adult fantasy comic 'Den' featured in the magazine Heavy Metal and animated film based on it. Michael Whelan would do Bat II, whose paintings have appeared on the covers of more than 350 books and magazines. Julie Bell did Bat III, she's married to Boris Vallejo, and the pair put out a fantasy art calendar every year, though both do solo work as well. Do you like fantasy art?

The musical - Using mostly songs from the Bat trilogy, the stage version premiered at the Opera House in Manchester, England. Set in Obsidian, a post-apocalypse New York City, it concerns Strat (Peter), forever young leader of a gang called 'The Lost'. He falls in love with Raven (Wendy) daughter of Falco (Capt. Hook) who rules the city. Needless to say this does not bode well. As of 2002 it's on an international tour. All said and done, can you get the Peter Pan idea behind the song considering the background? Strat can't stay in Raven's world, will be gone when the morning comes, etc?
