Results: The New Folk Singers Part 1
Published on 02/09/2025
Folk music comes from the German word “volk,” which means “the people.” When you think about contemporary folk music, most think about Bob Dylan, Joan Baez or Neil Young.
But before them came Pete Seeger, Lead Belly, Jean Ritchie, Odetta, and Woody Guthrie, who is often seen as the first significant contributor to the genre. These artists were all inspired by those that came before them.

Mumford & Sons is a British folk rock band formed in London in 2007. The band consists of Marcus Mumford, Ted Dwane, and Ben Lovett, with former banjo/guitarist Winston Marshall leaving the group in 2021. Marcus Mumford's voice has been described as extraordinary -- a voice that conveys anguish, sorrow and longing, while also lifting you along on a musical journey of story-telling. Their concerts are equally praised, with even non-fans saying it may be the best live concert they have ever seen. My brother is a big fan, and has seen them countless times, and he says each concert is wonderful and unique. Have you ever seen Mumford & Sons in concert?

Lord Huron is a Los Angeles-based American indie folk rock band composed of Mark Barry, Miguel Briseño, Tom Renaud, and founder Ben Schneider. The band's name was inspired by Lake Huron, the lake which Schneider grew up visiting; he spent evenings at the lake playing music around the campfire. They try and recreate that type of intimacy with their songs. This is their most famous song, but they have been making music since 2010. Are you familiar with this band?

Hailing from a quaint town in Co. Cork, Ireland, Darren Kiely's folk-infused pop sound originates from his inherited love of traditional Irish music, intertwined with modern influences such as The Lumineers, Mumford & Sons, and Noah Kahan. When he first moved to the U.S., he settled in New York, but now makes Nashville his home. He prefers to sing his own songs, so he figured Nashville is a good fit as a singer/songwriter. Do you enjoy any other singers who were originally from Ireland?

Strangely, although I prefer female singers, my list of modern folk singers is made up predominately of male voices. However, there is one female singer I love. Born outside Philadelphia, Lizzy McAlpine gained recognition when she began to share original songs and covers on Soundcloud and YouTube. "Older," is a gut-wrenching ballad about coming to terms with growing up. McAlpine grapples with the version of herself she thought she would be as a child, as well as her wants to return to simpler times. Her music is intimate and personal, and her voice is effortless. Do you enjoy her voice?
