"Let's Do It, Let's Fall in Love" was written in 1928 by Cole Porter for his Broadway musical Paris. With its mildly risqué, bordering-on-absurd lyrics, the song is a lighthearted mash-up of clever wordplay and double entendre. I always laughed about bees and fleas, my father would use a special voice for that part. It's also one of those numbers that has lent itself to additional topical verses over the years—a quick search will unearth a dozen additional verses. "When they begin the Beguine," wrote Cole Porter in 1935. The beguine is a dance, similar to a slow rumba, that was very modestly popular in the 1930s, coming from the islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique, where the Martinique beguine is a slow close dance with a roll of hips. Cole Porter had two stories for where he encountered the dance before enshrining its name in the song. In one, he saw it performed on an island in the South Pacific; in the other, later version, he saw Martinique immigrants perform it on a Paris dance-hall stage. It's a great piece of music to dance to. Are you familiar with "Begin the Beguine"?

One of the most romantic songs of all time might never have been written if Hoagy Carmichael had stuck to practising law. He'd been taught piano by his mother and while at college he supplemented his income by playing in bands. But one day, Hoagy Carmichael decided to put his law books on one side for good….and I'm very glad he did. Thankfully, Mitchell Parish came along and wrote some of the most beautiful lyrics in the English language to complement Hoagy Carmichael's wonderful composition. "Stardust" was on its way to becoming one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, and one of the most popular songs of all time. Are you familiar with "Stardust"?

Peter de Rose (1900-1950) was a prolific songwriter, composer, pianist, and author. Deep Purple is his most famous composition - it started as a piano solo, beautiful lyrics added later to become a hit song and a jazz standard. Among the many singers who recorded this song is the duo Donnie and Marie Osmond who sang it with a modern rock beat. Performed in this video by Christopher Whalen. "I Get a Kick Out of You" is a song by Cole Porter, which was first sung in the 1934 Broadway musical "Anything Goes," and then in the 1936 film version. The original version of "I Get A Kick Out of You" by Cole Porter had a line about cocaine, in which later versions changed to champagne by Hollywood's Production Code of 1934. It has been performed by many great singers over the years, I always enjoyed this song. My sister and I would dance to it and kick up a leg whenever "Kick" is sung.
