This Saturday April 12 and Sunday April 13 and Sunday April 13 over 200 terrestrial and online radio stations (mostly in the U.S., but several in Canada and others throughout the world) will be participating in the tenth annual Vinylthon. In this event each participating station is required to run at least one hour of programming wherein all the music (and comedy, etc., presumably) derives from vinyl records--as opposed to digital files, compact discs, or tape--for at least one hour over those two days. Many participating stations will have all their program hosts source all the music they play from vinyl. Before reading this question, had you heard of Vinylthon?

Vinylthon isn't only a celebration of music in a physical format that allows for packaging that can enhance the listening experience with visuals larger than those encasing other formats (think of how much smaller CD cases and cassette case inserts are than record sleeves). It also benefits a scholarship fund for college students majoring in broadcast studies who want to enter that field professionally upon graduation. Does that seem like a worthwhile cause to you?

As a former college radio disc jockey who has also hosted a couple shows on a community-sponsored FM signal, I can speak from personal experience that non-commercial radio (which is the kind of station most of this year's Vinylthon stations are) can be a haven for dedicated music aficionados to curate programming of a type commercial radio wouldn't allow. And, per this survey's inclusion in the series where it's placed, such radio programing can get weird, or at least idiosyncratic or eccentric. Do you listen to any non-commercial radio music hosts who you appreciate for the taste and sensibility they share that likely wouldn't fit on commercial stations?
