In 2005, twenty years ago, The Pus*ycat Dolls, led by Nicole Scherzinger had a massive hit with the catchy (if not slightly problematic) song Don't Cha. The song written by Busta Rhymes and CeeLo Green, but originally recorded in 2004 by Tori Alamaze, former backup vocalist for the hip hop duo OutKast, and was released as her debut single. After minor success, and dissatisfaction with her record label, Alamaze gave up her rights to the song. The Pus*ycat Dolls, an American burlesque dance troupe who were poised to reinvent themselves as a pop music girl group, were offered the song, and the rest of "herstory". Tainted Love, a hit for Soft Cell has been cited by numerous music sites as the greatest one hit wonder of all time. The track was released on the English synth-pop duo's 1981 debut studio album and made them superstars overnight. While Tainted Love seems totally '80s, the original song was actually composed by Ed Cobb of the Four Preps and recorded by Gloria Jones in 1964. When Soft Cell took this song and made it their own, it really blew up, and it's been covered by numerous artists since, including Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails and even sampled by Rhianna.
