'Early Morning Rain' goes all the way back to Gordon Lightfoot's 1966 debut album, but it existed as a potential recording as early as 1960. The scene he describes in the lyrics is from when he was in Los Angeles and was homesick and had the urge to head home. He went to the airport to watch the planes take off and found this therapeutic. The scene was enhanced by the rain that was falling. This mood stuck with him as he sat down to write, and 'Early Morning Rain' was the result. I think the lyrics are outstanding and the song found its way to the folk clubs of Edinburgh which is where I first heard it. RIP Gord. Love this song - agree?

Breaking up is hard to do and especially so when afterwards you sit looking out the window at a downpour and think about what might have been. Gordon Lightfoot used this feeling as inspiration for "Looking At The Rain." I have never experienced this myself of course, but I can still empathize with those who have and can appreciate this song for its craftsmanship. Do you like it?

This next one is aptly called "Rain" and is by The Beatles. Ringo was proud of his drumming on the song and Paul's bass playing set a new standard of virtuosity. John as lead vocal used a technique that was unique at that time - playing his voice backwards. George on lead guitar experimented with string detuning and other ways to create new sounds. The lyrics themselves were Lennon having his typical sardonic look at the world. The end result is one of my favorite Beatles tracks. Do you like this one?

This last one goes way back to 1957. I remember singing this song when my school class went to the public swimming pool for swimming lessons. A bunch of us who liked the song would sing it in the showers. The song is "Crying In The Rain" by The Everly Brothers. Do you like this one?
