In the post-war years, rural dance halls in many regions, experienced a boom in popularity, becoming a focal point for social life and entertainment. These halls, often simple structures with a ballroom, bar, and stage, provided a space for community gatherings, dancing, and live music, including big band swing, ballroom fox trots, and other popular styles. The post-war era saw a rise in dance hall businesses and increased audience sizes, fueled by the economic well-being of the working class and a desire for social interaction and escape. Small groups like my father's Band "The Jive Five" were always in demand in the rural towns and villages of the Okanagan in the post war years.
1. "On A Slow Boat to China" is a popular song by Frank Loesser published in 1948. The song is a well-known pop standard, recorded by many artists. The phrase originates from the game of poker to refer to a player who lost slowly. The journey to China by ship from the United States was known for how long it took, and the American composer, Frank Loesser, used the phrase as the title and the first line of his 1948 romantic ballad. I chose the Bette Midler clip as the piano and tempo are just the way my father played for the Dance Halls in the Okanagan in 1949 into the early 1950s. Have you heard this song "A Slow Boat to China" before?

2. Mack Gordon & Harry Warren wrote "I Wish I Knew" by Bill Evans Trio. It was written for the movie "The Diamond Horseshoe" and sung by Dick Haynes and Betty Grable. My father played this song a lot. It was very popular in the post wars years. It has been recorded by dozens of singers over the years, including Nat King Cole. A great slow dance song! Have you...?

3. The music is a 1927 tango cancion called "Adios Muchachos" composed by Argentinian Julio Cesar Sanders often credited in the US as "Lenny Sanders". The English lyricis by Dorcan Cochran and was publishedin 1951. Tony Martin's is the best known version of the song as it reached No. 3 on the US Billboard Magazine charts. Peggy Lee also recorded it on many of her albums. This was very popular in the 1950s in the Dance Halls of the Okanagan. Have you heard this song , "I Get Ideas" before?
