In the early 1960s, the music industry in the USA was run by executives who were still stuck in the 1950s as far as recognizing and promoting talent was concerned. Many acts had one hit record and the second release was almost identical to the first one. Then the act inevitably faded away. Any act that was different could not be pigeon holed and thus get air play on radio or TV. Some prominent acts found fame in the UK and then used that success to return to the states. Here are some examples from that time.
1. The first act that comes to mind in Jimi Hendrix. In the USA, he was playing gigs on the "Chitlin' Circuit", earning a place in the Isley Brothers' backing band and later with Little Richard, with whom he continued to work through mid-1965. He then played with Curtis Knight and the Squires. As an individual artist he was going nowhere. Hendrix moved to England in late 1966, after bassist Chas Chandler of the Animals became his manager. Within months, he had formed his band, the Jimi Hendrix Experience (with its rhythm section consisting of bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell), and achieved three UK top ten hits: "Hey Joe", "Purple Haze", and "The Wind Cries Mary". He achieved fame in the US after his performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 and went on from there. Did you know Jimi was a star in the UK before he was one in the USA?

2. The next act in this category is Sonny And Cher who didn't look like the typical act of that time. They were struggling to find success in the US, and The Rolling Stones, whom they met on tour, recommended they try their luck in London, where they believed the duo's unique look and sound would be better received. They visited the UK in August 1965, on the advice of Mick Jagger, who suggested they would be considered "cool" there. Their visit and the subsequent media coverage of a hotel eviction incident is widely credited with helping launch their superstardom on both sides of the Atlantic. Did you know they had to find fame in the UK before the USA? .

3. Gene Pitney was significantly more famous in the UK first, where his career flourished for decades,. He had a much more successful and consistent run on the UK charts, continuing to have hits until 1974, compared to his last US chart hit in 1969. He even became a British citizen in 2004 after a 42-year history of being a popular artist there. Did you know Gene Pitney became a Brit?
