The Threepenny Opera is a 1928 German stage musical by Bertolt Brecht. It's based on John Grey's 18th century The Beggar's Opera and elements from a few ballads. Set in Victorian times, it delves into the underbelly of London and various social themes.

Mack the Knife - The opening song is sometimes called The Moritat, a type of murder ballad sung by strolling Medieval minstrels. It introduces us to Macheath, a charismic but notorious criminal. It's been covered many times by various singers. Ever meet someone who seems charming up front, but sensed had other matters going on behind the scenes?

Pirate Jenny - Jenny is a prostitute with a romantic link to Macheath, yet knows he's never going to change his ways/ settle down despite her feelings. In this song she has a fantasy of being a pirate queen, blowing up the town, deciding the fates of all. Ever have thoughts, fantasies, dreams of having such power?

The movie - while there's been a few film versions of The Threepenny Opera, the only one I've seen is 1989's 'Mack the Knife'. It stars Raul Julia as Macheath who'd won a Tony from playing him on stage. It has never been released beyond VHS and not sure what happened with the film, the soundtrack contains several more numbers not in it. The video is The Army / Canon song from this film, which I find darkly funny. Ever been in the army or any other military branch?
