On March 28, "Grey's Anatomy" premiered a powerful episode, "Silent All These Years." Inspired by the current conversation on sexual violence and Christine Blasey Ford's testimony during Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation hearings in 2018, the hit medical TV show put rape survivors and consent front and center. The story follows a patient, who arrives at the hospital after being sexually assaulted outside of a bar. When she arrives at the hospital, the doctors must administer a rape kit, which includes taking photos, swabs and collecting other samples from the survivor. And all during this process, the victim is asked for her consent every step of the way. Initially, the extensive details of the rape kit were met with pushback from ABC's Standards and Practices department, but show creator Shonda Rhimes insisted on staying true to life. After the rape kit is administered, and the patient is wheeled away to surgery for injuries sustained during the rape, the hallway of the hospital is lined with the women on the show -- all of the women on the show -- because they all wanted to show support for what this storyline details. Elisabeth Finch, the screenwriter of the episode reflected on her experience watching Blasey Ford testify about her alleged assault. "I felt that the most damaging thing that happened in all that is that young women and men everywhere were told that consent was irrelevant". She then wrote the episode and its ground-breaking rape kit scene. This episode was so powerful and raw, that Twitter and Instagram were flooded with comments, all positive. Most said it brought tears to their eyes, and many felt that it was the most powerful scene they have ever seen on any show. And the message is clear: consent matters. Sex without consent is rape and sexual assault. No matter how you are dressed, how many drinks you have, how flirty you are. Consent matters. Do you agree with this?
