When I was a kid, the women in my mother's family spent the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas in their kitchens. Their husbands spent their time in line at the post office mailing packages of treats to relatives who lived in other states. One of Gran's specialties was Chex Party Mix.

We are a fourth generation homemade Chex Mix family. Even my son Dexter got in on the action- at fourteen, he began making it for his grandfather at Christmas. But gifting homemade treats to friends and family seems less common than when I was younger. Special diets and other factors make it a bit tricky I suppose. Do you make and gift holiday treats these days?

One of the best parts of making your own Chex Party is the way the house smells while the mix is in the oven. But Time Marches on. There are now Crock Pot versions. And the recipe on the back of this year's Chex box is made completely in the microwave. When making holiday treats or special family recipes, do you tend to stick to the original instructions or use some more modern methods and/or equipment?
