Self-Injury among teens and young adults has been one of the least discussed and most misconstrued behaviors, and until recently, one of the most hidden of all behaviors. Self-injury can be defined as cutting, scratching, opening and picking at wounds, burning, biting hitting and pulling out hair. Recently with celebrities such as Demi Lovato, Christina Ricci and Angelina Jolie coming out and publically speaking about it, it has been "talked about". According to a 2012 study, approximately 7.6% of third graders and 12.7% of ninth graders self-injured. Do you yourself, or do you know someone who self-injured?

Self-injury is a serious problem, and should never be ignored, trivialized or waited out. There is no diagnostic test for self-injury, and it may be linked to depression, anxiety or personality disorders. Above all, we need to end the stigma associated with self-injury. Do you agree that it is important to talk about self-injury, and for role models (especially for young teens and adults) to come out and speak about it in the media?
