Anxiety can be a normal reaction to stress, or it can cripple you. Knowing the difference can help you lead a functional life. The trouble is that for many of us, it's perfectly normal. It's hard to hear the words "everyone has anxiety" when you know that what you are feeling is so much more than just "normal". Having a little bit of anxiety once in a while isn't just normal, it's healthy. It allows us to make good decisions and get things done, and is the key to a fight-or-flight response in a dangerous situation. Anxiety becomes a problem, however, when it doesn't just affect you occasionally. When it begins to consume your thoughts daily, that's when it becomes something more serious. If it starts to affect your work, personal life, or health, then you might have a real, diagnosable anxiety disorder. Have you or someone in your family been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder?

If you feel you may have an anxiety disorder, there are certain key factors to signal when you should seek help. It also does not hurt to talk to a therapist or doctor about what you are feeling. Or even talk to a friend or family member. Do you have any of these signals?

People with anxiety disorders are often anxious all the time. There is no specific stressor that sets off their anxiety, and their fears are often irrational. Even though the person with anxiety knows that, in theory, they should not be so worried, they simply cannot get their body to listen to their brain.

If you have an anxiety disorder, your amount of anxiety is not equal to the size of the stressor. For example, you are anxious for an extended period of time – think weeks before an exam instead of days.

You're not just worried, you are physically ill from your anxiety. Intense anxiety can often cause headaches, dizziness, trembling, nausea, etc. You feel like you can't talk or breathe. You can't think or concentrate about anything other than your fear. You get red or sweaty. This is more than just butterflies in your stomach.

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older, or 18.1% of the population every year. It's not uncommon for someone with an anxiety disorder to also suffer from depression or vice versa. Nearly one-half of those diagnosed with depression are also diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders are highly treatable, yet only 36.9% of those suffering receive treatment. And many of those who do not seek treatment are those who feel they will not be taken seriously, or that it is not as important as "physical illnesses". Yet, recent studies have shown that the right balance of physical and mental well-being is essential for life expectancy and quality of life. Do you agree that both the physical and mental well-being is vital?
