Weight Watchers is no stranger to controversy, and on Thursday night it found itself once again in hot water. The 55-year-old company — which rebranded to "WW" in September , which stands for "Wellness that Works", to focus more on general health than on weight loss — started trending for all the wrong reasons with an unfortunately timed social-media campaign that coincided with an airstrike against Iran by the US military. The US military issued an airstrike on Thursday that killed Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the highest-profile Iranian military leader, near the Baghdad Airport in Iraq. Iranian officials warned that a "harsh retaliation is waiting" for the US, sparking fear of a pending war and building on tensions in the region that have deepened since the US invaded Iraq in 2003. In a poorly timed campaign, WW started promoting their new #thisismyWW, which trended among the Twitter hashtags like #WWIII and #worldwar3 appearing on national top-trend lists. WW was also at the centre of controversy in September after launching a "healthy eating" app for children. On September 13, protesters gathered outside WW's headquarters in New York City to speak out against the app, which they said was designed to "profit off the insecurity of children" and promote disordered eating. The former Weight Watchers was founded in 1963, and for most of its history, the primary service has been helping clients lose weight. The methods have evolved over the years, but the company is best known for its points system that assigns different points to different foods. In-person meetings are also a staple of the Weight Watchers plan, allowing dieters to meet up, get weighed, and discuss their struggles. Their rebrand is a direct response to the currently growing distaste for what's been called "diet culture" and a large body of research suggests that diets simply aren't sustainable and ultimately don't work. Although Weight Watchers has been one of the more successful and sustainable programs, the focus still has been on diet, and not enough about a healthier lifestyle. Have you ever joined Weight Watchers?
