In a previous survey I noted that some myths, even when not based on fact, continue to be spread and actively promoted because it serves a purpose. Today's list are the opposite and the truth should be spread.

The first one is that you have to wait 24 hours to file a missing persons report. Many people call 911 after their child or partner has been missing for that long. Time is of the essence and the first 24 hours can be critical. Which of the following facts about missing persons were you aware of.
There is no waiting period. In many shows and movies, people have only 24 or 48 hours to report missing people, but that waiting period doesn't exist in reality. As soon as you know an adult or child is missing, report it.

Anyone can be a missing person. It's not just limited to children. Adults can be reported as missing, too. If you suspect that a loved one can't be located and may need medical, legal, or other help, it's time to file a missing persons report.

Bring a complete description including a clear photograph from the shoulders up. Have a clear physical description (height, weight, age, and any identifying marks such as tattoos or birthmarks). Know what they were wearing and who they were with. If you don't currently know this about your child or loved one, start compiling it.

It is also important to be aware of another myth about missing persons. This one is about false expectations about what to expect after they're found. Which of the following were you aware of (that may be different from what you see on TV or in the movies)
People do have the right to go missing, and police cannot let loved ones know where you are without your consent — only that you are safe.

There are different types of missing persons, including people who simply become disoriented, people who are voluntarily missing and don't want to be found, people who are under the influence of a third party such as an abduction or missing due to accident, injury, or illness such as a hit-and-run, or someone with dementia. The police need to know.

My adult son is salad averse. He specifically will not eat iceberg lettuce and has bought into the myth that it is mostly water. I prefer romaine lettuce myself but have nothing against the other type, especially since it usually costs less and keeps longer. Were you aware of the following nutrition benefits?
A typical serving of 100 grams provides 17% of your daily Vitamin A and 20% of your Vitamin K requirements.

Cracking your knuckles causes arthritis. Cracking your knuckles may aggravate the people around you, but it won't raise your risk for arthritis. It may however make your joints less strong so stop doing it for that reason.

Gum stays in your intestines for seven years if you swallow it. It may not get digested but neither will it stay there. It will pass through your system like any other undigested material (roughage). Better to get rid of it that way than sticking it under a desk or table.

Humans only use 10% of their brains. Various parts of the brain have specific functions, and most of the brain is active at different times. Some people use the intellect and logic parts of the brain less than others but that is usually a habit - the capacity is still there.

Drink 3 litres of water every day to maintain health. My wife bugs me to try to do this (unsuccessfully). There is no scientific basis for this and overindulgence can be dangerous. Depending on the foods and liquids you consume, you may not need to drink 3 litres to meet your requirements. Drinking when you feel thirsty is one of the best ways most people can meet their daily needs.
