Because it's so effective at saving lives it's been approved in some areas for people to have with them in case of unintentional overdoses. In addition, some states have naloxone vending machines – which provide the medications for free – and can help people access doses quickly and reduce someone's risk of dying from an opioid overdose since, ideally, the medication should be given immediately.
