I need to have a tooth extracted and am very frightened. Since I have zero tolerance for pain, the oral surgeon said I have to be placed under anesthesia for 10-15 minutes. I'm a senior with a few health conditions and am afraid of not coming out of it. What are your thoughts?

Would the dentist consider nitrous oxide? I don't handle pain well either, and I've always done well with gas. Unfortunately, it's hard now to find dentists who use it, or have it covered by insurance.

If you're senior you've had a long life and I hope it's been a good one. Don't stress over anesthesia. If you believe in Heaven, that's where you go if you die. If there's nothing there, you won't know. I have quit a few health conditions, too, and I'm having a shoulder replacement next Tuesday and I'm not worried at bit. I hope you're relieved of fear.

God Bless you! You got this. You will be ok. You truly need to tell them that you are scared. Please let them know. They should be able to give you something prior to getting this done for a few days a head of time to calm you down. Nothing worse going in there to the Dentist and being upset. Getting upset will not help. Please ask for an ativan a mild anxiety medicine something for your nerves till you can get through it. Praying for you. God has you. Be strong.

i had oral surgery and i have a very high tolerance for pain. First of all, i would assume the oral surgeon has been informed about any and all your health conditions. You may be happier to conquer your fears under going your surgery knowing your mind was weaker than your courage. The anesthesia has been used for countless people over the years and you will awaken. Don't let your fears fumble progress.

I'm 74 years old and had to have 6 teeth extracted a couple of months ago. I was put to sleep and woke up a half hour later with 6 fewer teeth than I'd had before. No pain, even when the anesthetic wore off. I think you'll do fine. Do NOT let your husband near your tooth.

For having potentially painful dental work I was given a numbing agent before an injection of whatever that stuff is (Novocain or similar) and a whiff of nitrous oxide to help me relax. It leads to a state of euphoria, explaining its nickname, 'laughing gas.' Nitrous oxide is the least potent inhalational anesthetic. I would prefer this over full anesthesia.

The pain comes from the anesthesia shot and you don't actually feel the tooth as it is being extracted, so being put under isn't necessary unless you are just terrified of the procedure to the point you can't remain calm. .There is some pain after but not a an unbearable amount, it is more messy than anything.

These professionals that administer the anesthesia are very good at their job. As long as you are 100% honest with the doctor/dentist about all drugs you take and what and when you eat, smoke, etc., they are able to exactly calculate how much to give you and it is very safe. I have been under many times and fine every time.

Don't be afraid. Unlike many years ago tooth pulling could be or was a painful event. Today you can ask the Doctor if he can or will provide a 'substance', I don't know what it is called, to deaden the gum before inserting the needle. Having done this there is no longer pain and as long as you can tolerate the sound, in your mouth, and the pressures being applied during the procedure you will not have any issues.

I am very fearful of dentists as was very allergic to novacaine the first time I went to a dentist. I had to take everything I ate through a straw for 6 weeks. Since then, they use carbocaine and it "comes to" about 1/2-hor after the procedure. I have had 2 extractions. the first I was very allergic to the antibiotic that looks like styrofoam. The 2nd went much easier. I would opt for a local anesthetic vs being placed under.

They are really professional at what they do and likely do many of them on a daily basis so I wouldn't fear too much. You can probably opt to have laughing gas rather than general anesthesia at most places and also could take an inhaler or nebulizer before going under as it might make it easier coming out of the anesthesia. I had all mine done and I was wide awake so could discuss if that was an option too. My dentist froze my mouth they just put a really long Qtip like thing against your cheek and freeze it and also I had novocaine and it was really quick and simple didn't need to be asleep for it but I have a high pain tolerance too.

It's completely understandable to feel anxious about anesthesia especially with health concerns. However, modern anesthesia is very safe, especially for short procedures likes yours. your oral surgeon will assess your medial history to ensure it's the safest approach. If you are still worried, consider discussing your concerns with both your surgeon and an anesthesiologist -they can explain the process and reassure you.

It's better to be placed under anesthesia, it's quicker and easier. When you pull your tooth while awake with local anesthesia, you can feel the pressure of pulling the tooth and it takes a longer time.

I have had 6 teeth extracted over the past 20 years and each one they froze the area and pulled the tooth. I have never needed anesthesia. I would imagine when they wake you then you would have pain. freezing you have no pain and by the time the freezing is gone after about 3 hours the pain is minimal. Freezing is nothing. You are panicing for nothing. It is simple procedure.

If you have to have the tooth out, it seems you have two options: suffer the pain or take a chance with the anesthesia. There doesn't appear (on the surface) to be much danger in suffering the pain, so that might be the logical choice. Seems to me: "You pay yo' money and you takes yo' chances."

Aspen dental gave me several shots of anesthetic and when I said I couldn't feel anything they pulled the tooth out and it was quick and painless. They the put bone graft in so the gums don't shrink around the remaining teeth which also didn't hurt. It's been about 6 months now and I will get a partial put in instead of an expensive implant. I am 71 with breathing issues, sleep apnea and I wouldn't want to get put out but that wan\sn't even suggested. I would call other dentists and see if they all agree on anesthesia or not. I also have zero tolerance for pain and was always afraid to go to the dentist. Now a days even the shots don;t hurt!

Oral surgeons often have to evaluate older patients and if the surgeon is willing to do the surgery you should be fine. Ten-fifteen minutes is not a long time to be under anesthesia. I have had extractions with only local anesthesia and there is some pain involved, but it is short-lived. You will have some pain afterwards and your dentist will probably give you some pain medication.
