A bicycle built by a team including students and athletes in South Australia has been ridden into the record books as the world's longest bike. The bike, almost 42 metres (meters) long, weighing 2.5 tons and able to carry a 20-strong riding crew, was designed and built by a team from Santos and the University of South Australia.

Michele Nardelli from the university said the record attempt was not without some drama when the early test-run ended after just a few meters with the bike toppling over. "The huge bike was unable to handle the gradient on the road and had to be reset to a central position where the road was more even," Ms Nardelli said. Were you aware that a bicycle will topple over if the weight is not distributed in the center of a bike?

The record attempt was then made with a leaner crew of just seven riders, who smashed the previous world record by about 16 meters. "The ride has been officiated locally and the result will be registered with the Guinness Book of World Records in the next few weeks." The criteria to take out the world record meant the bike had to have just two wheels, be ridden in the same way as a standard bike and be powered by pedal and chain. Have you ever been in the Guinness Book of World Records?

The project to build the bike was a class activity sponsored by Santos for UniSA's mechanical engineering students. Ms Nardelli said the design was a combination of all of the students' work. Do you think the students work was inventive?
