My kids have this friend from the next street over that is always asking for apples. I would feel bad saying "no", because apples are so healthy. I've taken to buying extra every week just for her. Have you ever kept extra food on hand for neighbor kids?

At first when she would come over, she would have to be home by 6 or 6:30. We eat at 5:30, so I offered her dinner and she ate with us a few nights. Then she started suddenly having to be home by 5:30. That's actually fine with me, because I don't always have extra (we're already a family of five), but I wondered if maybe her parents weren't happy I was feeding her. In hindsight, I probably should have had her call and ask. If you feed neighbor kids, do you ask their parents first?

When she first started coming over, my oldest son (they are both 8) told me that she told him she needs to eat more apples because she's "fat". IMO, she is a perfectly normal little girl. Does it surprise you to hear a child that young talk about being fat?
