Glamour Magazine named the anonymous woman at the center of the high-profile Brock Turner rape case as one of their 2016 Women Of The Year. Without naming her, the magazine cited the impact of Emily Doe's powerful sentencing statement, which she read after her assailant was sentenced to six months in jail, as the reason for her award. The 12-page letter prompted a national conversation about "rape culture" and drinking on college campuses, as well as a recall movement against the sentencing judge and a California law requiring minimum sentences for sexual assault.

The Brock Turner rape case got a lot of attention -- first as a brutal sexual attack on a woman on a college campus, and then as the rapist got a mere six months in jail for this viscous attack, an injustice carried out by a judge that said, "A prison sentence would have a severe impact on him...I think he will not be a danger to others." Then to add insult to injury, Turner ended up serving only half of his already lenient "slap on the wrist" for such a brutal crime. Do you remember this case?

In this month's Glamour Magazine, the victim, who still wants to remain anonymous speaks out publicly for the first time. She said her initial reaction to this miscarriage of justice was to feel "embarrassed for trying, for being led to believe I had any influence" and felt that "if this case was meant to set the bar, the bar had been set on the floor." Do you think her initial reaction was justified?

However, after the tremendous outpouring of support, and public displays of support from total strangers, she now knows that this ordeal has to mean something. She feels that women cannot let this happen to them, no matter what the outcome. They cannot be victims. They have to take back their power. She says (directed at other rapists and the courts who don't punish them enough) , "If you think the answer is that women need to be more sober, more civil, more upright, that girls must be better at exercising fear, must wear more layers with eyes open wider, we will go nowhere... I hope you grow up knowing that the world will no longer stand for this. Victims are not victims, not some fragile, sorrowful aftermath. Victims are survivors, and survivors are going to be doing a hell of a lot more than surviving." Do you think her words will give other women going through similar ordeals strength?
