When I first began working grocery, my store was a pioneer in charging for plastic bags. This really helped the upswing in using cloth bags, but it was like pulling teeth for many customers. We didn't make any money at all on the bags (I ordered them and paid the invoices, so I know whereof I speak), but some people were really put out by this. Fast-forward 12 years, and re-useable bags are now the norm. In the Northwest Territories, every store has to charge 25 cents for each bag, no matter how bad the quality. This is law. People still buy the plastic bags, but their use has dramatically decreased. Please comment as to how it works in your area. Happy shopping!
