Results: When The Word Mother Takes On A Whole New Meaning

Li Li Juan, a former millionaire, started adopting sick and disabled children who were abandoned by their parents and orphaned children whose parents had died in mining accidents. The 47-year-old, from northern China's Hebei Province, has adopted 72 abandoned children over the course of 19 years. She spent all her money caring for them, and is now facing a huge debt of over two million yuan. Not only that, she has also been diagnosed with cancer, but continues to care for these children. Tragically, her own son refuses to speak to her and lives with her mother, because she wasn't with him when he suffered a spinal injury, choosing to be with one of her adopted children who was suffering from hydrocepahlus at the time. So essentially she has sacrificed her relationship with her own child to care for these children who have no one. Do you admire her for that?

In February 1993, Mary Johnson's son, Laramiun Byrd, was shot to death during an argument at a party. He was 20, and Mary's only child, and he was shot by a 16 year old boy named Oshea Israel. He now lives back in the old neighborhood in Minneapolis--right next door to Mary. By her invitation. Mary was able to forgive. She credits God-- but also concedes a more selfish motive. "Unforgiveness is like cancer," Mary says. "It will eat you from the inside out. It's not about that other person, me forgiving him does not diminish what he's done. Yes, he murdered my son - but the forgiveness is for me. It's for me." As for Oshea, it took him a lot longer to forgive himself, and now he is determined to prove to himself but especially Mary, that he can be a contributing member of society, and she has become a mentor -- even a mother figure to him.
