As many of you might I recall the Columbine shooting all too well. It is unfortunate, but a sad fact of our times, that my son who is a senior in high school had grown up in world in which school shootings have occurred every year he has been in school. B.T.W this is a known fact that he brought to my attention, particularly after the Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting last year. Anyhow, his school has made a futile attempt to make parents and students a like feel as if they have taken great measures to thwart would-be assassins from entering the school by implementing automatic door locks that only an attendant can buzz you in after you have shown I.D into an outdoor camera; however, the door is unlocked during end of class periods (when students move between buildings, and so too can anyone who looks like a student). What I find interesting is that when he was attending his final year of grade school (6th grade) shortly after Sandy Hook all grade schools in the area implemented this locked door procedure. Every school but the high school did this, until last year's Marjory Stoneman Douglas incident. The end result is that my son, and none of the students there feel safe. Recently, they thought they had another drill occur, but it turned out to be a false alarm, and no one knows how an active shooter alarm was set off. The commotion that occurred was very difficult because my son and his peers experienced a few teachers crying (which is understandable) and a few teachers cracking jokes and not taking the possibility seriously (which in not totally understandable, yet my son is mature enough to discern that perhaps this is a coping mechanism). As a result, and because of the 20 year anniversary approaching, I am a little nervous. My son has been a little uneasy. I told him a few weeks ago that I fear and hope the FBI will be on alert for the sake of copy-cat idiots. Today a girl from Florida made it to Denver and threatened shoot a school in the area. My fears have been justified and we are only a few days from the actual anniversary date.
