Every year, the Persian New Year, called Nowruz, which begins on the first day of spring, is celebrated, but this year, it has special meaning. Nowruz, which literally translates into "New Day" marks the beginning of the Persian new year, a celebration which lasts for 13 days. The holiday, which dates back 3,000 years, is rooted in Zoroastrianism – an ancient Iranian religion that influenced later religions including Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Although Nowruz has its roots in an ancient religion, the holiday itself has evolved and now is completely secular, a celebration of renewal and nature. This year, with what is happening in Iran, with the anti-regime protestors, Nowruz has taken on a whole new meaning. Are you familiar with the Persian new year, and what is happening in Iran?

I have posted a survey on Nowruz every year at this time, for the past six years, and numerous surveys about what is happening in Iran. It is personal to me, as my husband is from there and has been against the regime and all it stands for, since he came to Canada over 39 years ago. At this time, the Iranian regime would like nothing better than for all celebrations of this holiday to cease, and are actively arresting anyone they see out side dancing, singing and celebrating. Do you agree that what is happening in Iran right now goes against all human rights?

Five Iranian girls, in defiance to what is happening over there right now, posted a dance video that went viral among Iranian social media users. It's illegal for women to dance in public in Iran, but the video has inspired others across the country to post similar videos with the same song. After this video was posted, it was taken down by the regime, and these young women were tracked down, with warrants out for their arrest. Does it anger you to hear that people are being arrested for dancing in public?

So this year, the idea of a "new beginning" speaks directly to the Persian people's hopes for a new change in their country, which has definitely picked up momentum since the fall of 2022. This year, besides the traditional greeting of "Nowruz Pirouz" which means "Victorious new year", Persians are adding, "may we celebrate next year in a free and democratic Iran". If you are aware of the history of the country of Iran, do you think it is possible that this could become a reality?
