I like to give compliments. I suppose there is a selfish aspect to my giving compliments, as it makes me feel good to know I might have brightened someone's day. I'm not talking about insincere flattery, or using a compliment for manipulation, but simply sharing a positive thought that pops into my head. For example, while walking my dog today I complimented a stranger on how organized the interior of her garage was. Her grin showed she appreciated the remark.

I think compliments can be especially beneficial in the workplace, where sometimes the focus seems to be on criticism (constructive or otherwise), rather than praise. Very often the most reliable and productive employees are taken for granted. As someone who was in a supervisory position, I made it a habit to compliment co-workers for a job (big or small) well done. I was delighted when my boss referred to me as the "Morale Officer" during an evaluation. Do you or did you get enough praise in any form (in person or in print) for how you did your job(s)?
