I recently attended the funeral service of a man I knew who was a veteran of World War II. Do you know anyone who fought in WWII who's still alive or died in the past year or so?

This man I knew was patriotic as all get out, festooning his home with U.S. flags(before he moved to an elderly care facility several months before his passing). Perhaps Ironically, he was humble enough about defending his nation that he refused to participate in an honor Flight for war veterans; but he was proud enough to often wear a hat that declared his status as a WWII vet. Do you have any articles of clothing that tout your participation in an event important to the history of where you live (country, state/province, town, etc.)? Yes

I've seen the man I'm on about wear the hat I referenced in the previous question. What I found out at his memorial service about his wearing that hat, in a eulogy from one of his children, is that identifying himself as a veteran of World War II by wearing his signature headwear would get him free meals at certain restaurants (especially a barbecue place he liked that operates from a patriotic angle already) and especially deferential service from other businesses. Whether it was by wearing a hat or anything else or not,. has identifying yourself as associated with a particular event netted you any freebies or especially attentive customer service?
Yes (and I may cite an example in a comment)

My understanding is that the man I knew didn't draw vocal attention to himself as a war vet nor insisted that eateries and other establishments give him discounts and freebies. He merely let his hat do the talking, so to speak, along with his naturally ingratiating friendliness. By the same token, I'd suppose the first goodies he got for letting it be known he's a WWII survivor was an incentive for him to keep wearing his hat. Do or would you wear something identifying you with a momentous event or cause in order to avail yourself to the free stuff and preferred service it could get you? Yes (and if i already do, i may mention it in a comment)

I've asked about in in a previous survey, but I have a US Marines cap I like wearing that has has elicited thanks for the military service people seeing me wear it thought I put in. i just like the hat and haven't ever served militarily. If I wanted to be a jerk, I could try exploiting that cap for freebies; but that could get me in legal trouble for stealing valor. Have you any clothing that, if you wore it in the right circumstance, could get you favors you don't deserve?
