2. During a celebration of the 30th anniversary of the German Democratic Republic in 1979, photographer Regis Bossu captured this photo of the Soviet Union's leader Leonid Brezhnev and East Germany's President Erich Honecker's "Socialist fraternal kiss". Rooted in early Christian and Russian Orthodox traditions, the Socialist fraternal kiss became a diplomatic tool to show the close bond between Socialist countries. It involved an embrace, mutual kiss to cheeks, and on rare occasions a kiss on the mouth. Graffiti artist Dimitri Vrubel painted a mural of the kiss on the Berlin War with the title, "My God, Help Me to Survive This Deadly Love." The painting has been preserved in a gallery. Have you seen this kiss before?
