Results: Protocol at U.S. sporting events (Canadians and non-US folks, this is for you, too!)

Sporting events' participants and spectators often, but not always, place their hands over their hearts during the US National Anthem, "The Star Spangled Banner." The Flag Code, adopted first in 1923, requires those who are not veterans or members of the Armed Forces to face the flag and stand with a hand over their heart. If you are American, do you place your hand over your heart during the National Anthem?

The preceding picture shows a woman with a cell phone in her left hand during the national anthem. While not part of The Flag Code, etiquette suggests dropping one's cigarette and putting down the nachos during the national anthem. Have you ever seen someone, at a sporting event, continue to hold a phone, drink, snack or something else during the song?

The Flag Code further specifies that men in audiences are to remove hats or other headwear with their right hands and place them over their left shoulders. Have you seen men keep their hats on during the national anthem?

Sometimes sport teams do something different, such as in the picture of teammates putting their hand on the shoulder of the player in front of them. Have you ever seen something like this?

Sometimes, those who seem least likely to put their hands over their hearts are members of a sport team. I've observed this primarily during both college and professional basketball games. Have you ever seen basketball players keep their hands to their sides, or behind them, during the national anthem?
