Racism is defined as a belief that race is a fundamental determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race. Not all racism is blatant and destructive. Passive or covert racism is racial discrimination that is concealed or subtle rather than obvious or public. It's saying or doing something that doesn't really sound offensive, but in reality it actually is. Think of assuming all Black people play basketball, or all Jewish people are good with money. This type of racism still perpetuates the idea that we are defined or grouped by our races, for better or worse. Comedian Lilly Singh has a YouTube video on turning the tables on this type of passive racism. After watching this video, do you think you've ever acted in this way?

I am overtly racist, and proud of it (you ever think maybe you should not be this way, and certainly not proud of it?)

Language does matter. We may not always be aware of everything we say, but sometimes give it a second before you say something. Think how will this comment be perceived by others, and how will it reflect my values as a person. Do you pay attention to what you say to others?
