Love & Relationships
Back in the early 80's, I was a college student (it's true!), had a roommate, let's just call him Jack. Jack had a girlfriend, let's call her Diane. I knew this pair well, best man at their wedding, they had a couple of children. Then there was the night I got the call from Diane about her hubby cheating with a couple clients of his. Like a fool, I rushed in to help and in the process lost a pair of friends and made an old school mix tape about my feelings, consider this a musical journey through that. No one is forcing you to listen or even answer, just been trying to express this in a survey for some time.

Simple Joys - Ben Vereen, the musical Pippin. My first thought was WTF? How can a guy with a wife, kids, home, job pull this off? Not only that, he was a friend. This was my answer musically...maybe those sweet summer evenings just cease in cases and people seek them elsewhere. Ever find yourself in a relationship you feel this isn't working and cheat?

Original Sin - Taylor Dayne / The Shadow soundtrack. Then I got pissed. While not openly judging 'Jack', it was there...dude, what happened and all that. "You can lose yourself in pleasure, but will it ever be enough" seemed to sum it up for me, as well as "The natives are so restless tonight." Ever get ticked off at a good friend for their doings?

Nobody's Side - Elaine Paige, the musical Chess. This was the phone call at night from Diane. I will never forget the pain, anger, feeling she'd done something wrong, fear of violence. Guess I must be decent at listening or calming folk down, but not a fun thing and not the first of such calls. This song was that anger for me. Ever dealt with such a call or conversation in some way?

The Arbiter - Bjorn Skifs from Chess once again. This was me, thought I could ease tensions, watch the kids while Jack and Diane worked things out, maybe even see a counselor, though not as ruthless. Not a good idea, sooner or later you start being the scapegoat. Ever try to help friends and end up taking blame?

Three Hits - Indigo Girls. "Are you leveed like a treasure, only words can help me find you. And this world's a fickle measure, I would painfully remind you." Yeah, not quite what the song was about, but again the idea of maybe helping in a three way relation, but knowing this is all for naught. Diane actually did cut her hand in some fight between her and Jack, hence the 'red hand' bit. Ever get to the point you let friends go their own way?

Battle of the Dragon - Stevie Nicks. Aftermath, yeah, no one walks away from this sort of thing. I've not seen Jack and Diane since this, don't care to. Wonder at times how much effect this had on ideas of a relationship. In any case, end babble and thanks for coming along. Ever find yourself in some situation that still haunts you years later?
