Traditionally, including something old was a way to ward off the evil eye and protect any future children the couple might have. But on a more general and lighthearted note, something old represents continuity. Contemporary couples use this as a chance to wear a sentimental piece of jewelry or item of clothing belonging to an older relative. Often the parents of the bride will gift her an heirloom before the ceremony. A more fun and modern twist to this has been to have grandparents be the ring bearer and flower girl, especially with the popularity of child-free weddings. Have you seen this at any weddings you've attended?

Something new offers optimism for the future. The couple is about to enter into a new chapter in life, so walking into marriage with something new makes total sense. It's also an easy one to achieve. But some couples are actually going for new creative ways to celebrate at their wedding. Sally Burky and her husband are a newlywed couple from Ozark, Missouri, and as animal lovers, did their best to help dogs in need even during their wedding day. They contacted a no-kill shelter, and on their special day the senior dogs walked down the aisle side by side with the bridesmaids. The dogs who took part to the wedding were struggling to find a forever home, and have now been adopted, and the couple also collected donations for the shelter during their wedding day. Do you think this is a "new" way to personalize your wedding and help out senior dogs waiting to find a home?

Including something borrowed brings the couple good luck. By borrowing something from a happily married friend or relative, the bride or couple ensures a little of their good fortune rubs off on them. The old-fashioned superstition urged the bride to borrow the undergarments of a female friend or relative with a happy marriage and healthy kids. Of course, these days it's usually jewelry or hair accessories. Have you ever heard of anyone wearing borrowed undergarments at their wedding?

Something blue was also meant to deflect that evil eye, the blue stands for love, purity and fidelity—what the Old English considered were three key qualities for a solid marriage. The traditional something blue was often a blue wedding garter worn beneath the bride's white dress. As garters (and the retrieval process especially) have become unpopular, the something blue has been easily found in flowers, jewelry, ribbons, hair pieces and so on. My daughter wore a wedding gown that was actually a light blue, instead of white, but for that extra blue touch, she wore blue shoes. Do you like seeing the touches of colour in wedding dresses, which are very popular now?
