There was a time when I was being treated for depression at this time of the year and I was told by one of my medical folk that Christmas time usually sees an increase in people seeking medical treatment for mental illnesses of one kind or another. I can quite understand this since it is a time when we are so busy doing things for other people that we don't take time for ourselves. Here are some statistics that typically take a blip in the wrong direction at this time of year. Being aware may help you to avoid being one of them.

When I was growing up in the UK, a phrase that was quite common in stressful situations was "count to ten". Doing this I find helps avoid instinctive and impulsive reactions that can cause destructive consequences. Road rage is one of them. Being polite is another way to avoid road rage. Here are some stats about road deaths in various countries. I think politeness and stress coping can lower these stats. Which of these countries do you think have road rage as one of the biggest contributors towards road deaths?

Christmas time also sees a blip in the murder rate for reasons similar to road rage. This is a time of year when our patience, tolerance and stress coping skills are put to the test. "Count to ten" and "keep calm and carry on" are tools to reduce the temperature in the kitchen and elsewhere. Which of these murder rates do you think would be lower if one simply counted to ten instead of reacting impulsively?

While happiness isn't solely a Christmas metric, countries consistently ranked as happiest globally, like Finland, Denmark, Iceland, and Sweden, are known for strong social support, work-life balance, and festive cheer, making them ideal spots for joyful Christmas experiences. Even though you can't visit there you can have a Scandinavian kind of Christmas. Which of the following will you try to do this Christmas?
If someone is rude to you, you will respond with kindness and courtesy.

If someone tries to grab your parking space (or anything else) you will let them have it (the parking space).

If someone does something that would normally raise your anger level (and blood pressure) you will count to ten, then keep calm rather than give a hair trigger angry response.

If someone does or says something stupid, you will wait until the new year before pointing it out to them.
