In 2015, 38 year old Brad Ryan learned that his 89 year old grandmother, Joy — who has lived in Duncan Falls, Ohio all her life — had never seen mountains or the ocean. Her husband recently passed away, and the two had only travelled to Florida, and never to the ocean. "She said it very matter of fact to me one day: 'It's a shame I didn't get to see more of that in my life. I never had the chance to.'" So Brad decided to do something about that. In 2015, the two went on their first trip together, to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. They travelled to 21 national parks in just 28 days, including Yosemite, Yellowstone, Glacier, Joshua Tree, Grand Canyon, Sequioa and Canyonlands. This year, they went to Acadia National Park. They plan to hit the 20 remaining National Parks in the continental U.S. before they figure out how to get Grandma Joy to Hawaii. Do you enjoy hearing about this special bond between grandson and grandmother?

You may be surprised to know that despite their close bond now, the two have not always had a close relationship. Ryan and his grandmother had been very close when he was younger but their relationship became strained when his parents divorced in 2001. In fact, he lived with his mother, and years had gone by where he didn't even see her. They reconnected at a family wedding, and these trips were a way of making up for lost time, in more ways than one. So, these trips became not so much about creating new memories, as it was about making up for all the memories they did not share, while they were estranged. Is there someone in your family (or even a friend) who you wish you could reconnect with, and make up for all the time lost?
