The reviews for Nouveau Duluth were so good that the deli serving Canadian cuisine, landed as #1 on TripAdvisor's best restaurants in Montreal, Quebec. The place had 85 reviews, each awarding five stars. This was despite the fact that, apart from four strange photographs, there was no information available about its exact location or the contents of its menu. Turns out, not only was all the hype grossly exaggerated, the restaurant doesn't even exist. Do you find it strange that this non-existent restaurant made it to the top restaurants of Montreal?

Le Nouveau Duluth does not exist but the ease with which it rose to the top of a travel advice site is a clear example of how easy it is to create buzz with no substance behind it — and what challenges real restaurants face getting noticed in the algorithm. These ratings are all based on ratings, so bad ratings, even if they are made up, can damage a restaurant or hotel's reputation. And obviously, great ratings, even if completely made up, can create buzz for something that does not exist. Do you chose your restaurants or hotels based on ratings on travel sites?

I must admit, I put a lot of stock in online reviews, but always check to make sure the reviews are pertinent to what I'm looking for. If reviews mention that the children's activities are lacking, it doesn't make any difference to me. Or if reviews mention the lack of a spa or gym, it also does not affect me. Sometimes reading reviews almost feels like the same people are writing multiple reviews, so I don't worry too much about these (figure it may be just one or two disgruntled visitors). Have you ever written an online review for a hotel or restaurant?

Some reviews, to my amusement, are funnier than they really should be. The things that people tend to complain about, you just have to laugh! Here are just a few of the funnier real reviews I have seen...which of these do you find funny?
"Beach is too sandy, but clear water" -- Tumon Beach, Hawaii

"Nothing but fish and seafood on the menu, and I don't eat any of it." -- Harbor Seafood Market & Restaurant in Atlantic Beach, Florida

"Can't believe I could not order chicken parmigiana and Caesar salad at this place" -- Osteria da Caterina, Florence, Italy (just a note: these two dishes are 100% American style Italian food, and you can't find them anywhere in Italy)
