The fields, marshes forest and coast are home to a variety of birds and small animals. There are many types of plants, trees and flowers. Do you like seeing odd geographic formations?

History - Mackinac comes from the Ojibwe word Mitchimakinak, meaning "Great Turtle". It was home for the Odawa and other indigenous peoples before European settlers in the 17th century. It became a fur trading post, the British built a fort there during the US Revolutionary War. Two battles of the War of 1812 were fought on the island. The Grand Hotel - Mackinac eventually became a tourist attraction / summer colony. Designed by George Mason and Zachariah Rice, Carleton Varney was the decorator. The hotel opened July of 1887, rates at the time being 3 to 5 dollars. It claims to have the world's longest porch (600ft). Mark Twain, Thomas Edison and five US presidents have been guests (some of the suites named after first ladies). Ever stayed in a ritzy or historic hotel?

Somewhere in Time - released in 1980, this film was scripted by Richard Matheson based on his novel Bid Time Return. Christopher Reeve portrays a playwright who becomes obsessed with a photo of a young actress (Jane Seymour) and decides to find a way to travel back in time to meet her. Much of it was filmed on Mackinac Island and in the Grand Hotel, though some things altered for time frame and location. Ever visit somewhere you felt 'out of time' in terms of surroundings?
