Results: This survey is about Africa, a continent that is sometimes thought of as one country and often underestimated and misunderstood by the rest of the world.

I have met many people from Africa over the years starting with one of my best friends at elementary school, fellow students in high school and college and many colleagues in my various careers. I often try to match the different accents, facial features and even skin colour to which of the many countries in Africa they might be from just as I do with people from different parts of the UK (accents only). I assume many African Americans have traced which part of that vast continent their ancestors came from. There is so much about Africa we never hear about so I have collected some interesting facts to share with you.

Africa is the second-largest and most diverse continent. It's considered the "cradle of humankind," with evidence suggesting humans originated there. Here are my first three facts about Africa. Which of them do you find interesting?

The Sahara Desert's transformation from a green land to desert was influenced by both natural climate changes and human activities such as nomadic tribes with livestock like goats. When wealth was measured by how many goats a person owned, overgrazing by livestock may have accelerated the desertification process.

The Sahara Desert is not the largest desert in the world. The largest desert is the Antarctic Desert, which is a polar desert. The Sahara is the largest hot desert and the third largest overall, after Antarctica and the Arctic.

The Sahara Desert is not the driest desert in the world either. The driest desert is the Atacama Desert in Chile, which receives less than 1 mm of precipitation per year, and some areas haven't received rain for centuries.

Despite challenges like we experienced before we became civilized, Africa is experiencing economic growth and modernization. The key is education which in turn leads to a growing middle class. Indoor light so that kids and adults can study is the single most important contributor to African development. (See clip)
