Whether an attraction qualifies as a tourist trap is often in the eye of the beholder, and some are still beloved by locals. Some are iconic locales now overrun or overrated. Others lure road trippers out of the way of their intended destinations. They might be cheesy, inauthentic, overpriced, crowded, boring, ugly, or just plain not worth the time. Here is a collection of American tourist traps that may leave you wishing you'd stayed at home. Cheapism is my source for this series.

Kentucky: Ark Encounter. Opened in July 2016, Ark Encounter promises to bring the Biblical story of Noah's Ark to life. The wooden replica of the ship was built according to dimensions provided in the Bible — 510 feet long, 85 feet wide, and 51 feet high. Some visitors find the admission prices big as well, especially after construction won government tax breaks: An adult ticket is $65, admission for youngsters is $32, and visitors also pay for parking and activities inside the park, such as a $60 zip line experience. "I don't see how families can afford it," one reviewer writes on TripAdvisor. Does this sound like an attraction you would like to visit?

The Voodoo Museum located in New Orleans, Louisiana, offers real human skulls, Voodoo dolls, a man with a gator head, and a Rougarou (a regional name for a werewolf). This place tries very hard to be straightforward and informative, but it's super creepy all the same. It receives mixed reviews. General admission is $10, and seniors, military, and students pay $8, according to Atlas Obscura. It's best to confirm with the museum directly about the specific policy for children if you are planning to visit with kids. While some find it a fascinating and informative experience, especially with the guided tours, others find it underwhelming and overpriced for its small size and limited exhibits. However, several Tripadvisor reviews say that they are noted for their respectful and knowledgeable approach to Voodoo, avoiding sensationalism. Do you find cultural museums to be interesting?
