The media loves to report incidences of passengers trying to open a door on the plane in mid flight. This might induce panic in some passengers but this panic is misplaced. Passengers were never in danger. Were you aware of the following safeguards?
it is physically impossible to open a plane door at cruising altitude. Jets cruise at altitudes of 30,000–40,000 feet, where outside air pressure is extremely low. Cabins are pressurized to simulate an altitude of around 6,000–8,000 feet. This air pressure difference between the inside and outside the aircraft exerts a force around 8 pounds per square inch (psi) across the entire surface of a door. That adds up to thousands of pounds pushing outward to seal it shut. Even the strongest person alive couldn't budge it.

Modern airliners also use what are known as plug doors. Unlike your house door, which swings outward, a plug door has to first open inward before it can swing out. When the cabin is pressurized, the door is literally sealed against its frame by that force, making it impossible to move inward in the first place.

The doors also have robust mechanical locks and latches. Once the plane leaves the ground, these engage automatically. The doors must be designed so they cannot be opened when the plane reaches certain speeds—typically from taxi speeds of about 80 knots upwards.

The outside air temperature at a typical cruising altitude is extremely cold, and necessitates sophisticated heating and pressurization systems to maintain comfortable cabin temperatures for passengers. Many dress for their intended destination rather than the flight there. Here are some travel dress code tips. Which of them will you follow next time?
The outside air temperature ranges from -55°C (-67°F) to -70°C (-94°F). If you have a window seat you are inches away from those extremes, especially if you lean against the window area to nap. A buffer of a pillow or blanket is recommended.

Choose breathable and stretchy clothing like joggers, leggings, or soft trousers that allow for ease of movement during long journeys. If you have compression socks, wear them. If you don't have them, get them.

Wear layers to easily adjust to different temperatures, such as a t-shirt, a sweater and items with pockets or other functional features. A hood can give you privacy and reduce the light level to help you sleep.

The air in a plane can become extremely dry. Your body will wick moisture in "certain areas" to compensate. Stay hydrated and wear breathable items to avoid a cold damp feeling in those "areas."

Here are a few tips to have a smooth trip devoid of incidents. Which of them will you add to your "things to do" the next time you fly somewhere?
Arrive early to give yourself ample time for check-in, security, and boarding to reduce stress. Stress can make you sweat and this can be misread as you having something to hide. Having yourself and your luggage searched can cause you to miss your plane (or worse).

Choose your seat based on what you want to do on the plane. An aisle seat provides easy access for stretching and movement, while a window seat offers a place to lean against and sleep. Once you are at cruising altitude, the view from the window is nothing special. Pack entertainment, an eye mask, noise-canceling headphones to optimize rest and enjoyment. Take some healthy snacks, a neck pillow, and be sure to charge your devices.

Consider a seat in the back of the plane. A seat in the back of the plane is noisier and has sometimes less leg room. It makes you one of the last off the plane too. However when your flight isn't full, you might find an empty row or a couple empty adjacent seats where you can stretch out more. Also you can watch which rows don't fill up ahead of you, so you can claim one after everyone is seated.

Avoid alcohol, caffeine and other substances that can dehydrate you and make you attract unwanted attention. Avoid divulging personal information to the traveler next to you via conversation and when using your phone. Don't have your home address and phone number on your luggage tags.
