Whether an attraction qualifies as a tourist trap is often in the eye of the beholder, and some are still beloved by locals. Some are iconic locales now overrun or overrated. Others lure road trippers out of the way of their intended destinations. They might be cheesy, inauthentic, overpriced, crowded, boring, ugly, or just plain not worth the time. Here is a collection of American tourist traps that may leave you wishing you'd stayed at home. Cheapism is my source for this series.

New Hampshire: Ice Castles. These human-made ice caverns operate in several locations, including Lincoln and North Woodstock, during the winter months. You can explore ice caverns, squeeze through passageways, wander beneath icy archways, race down ice slides, and feel like royalty upon frozen thrones. While praised by many for its beauty and fun quotient, many Yelpers have dinged the attraction for having rude staff and others said it just didn't look as impressive as advertised. These are weather related activities, so you need to be aware of that. Ticket prices range from $15 to $23, depending on the time. Do you enjoy winter related activities, in general?

New Jersey: Atlantic City Boardwalk. Atlantic City has something for everyone, no matter how long you stay. Boardwalk strolls are the city's most significant highlight. The wooden path is bordered by places to eat, shops and quaint arcades for four miles. However, some people feel it's not a good place for children and is in need of refurbishing. These are just some of the downsides of the present incarnation of the Atlantic City Boardwalk, some reviewers say. The iconic boardwalk, lined with stores, restaurants, and casinos, dates to 1870 and many feel it has seen far better days. Have you ever visited Atlantic City?
