Louisiana: Roseate spoonbill. The spoonbill stands out with its pink feathers and long speckled beak. It swings its beak to sift through mud and shallow waters for food like crustaceans and snails. The Audubon Field Guide notes that spoonbills engage in unique courtship behaviors, including presenting twigs and bill clasping. Males help build nests and care for their young. Maine: Sunfish. These gigantic fish can be confused with large ocean debris or even whales or sharks. The ocean sunfish, or mola mola, has a unique shape and spends its life swimming slowly or drifting, eating jellyfish. They can weigh up to 2,200 pounds and grow up to 8 feet long. They are seen in warmer months in the Gulf of Maine and are visiting more often as ocean temperatures rise. Have you ever heard of this gigantic fish before this survey?

Massachusetts: Hickory horned devil. The devil is the green, orange, and black caterpillar stage of the royal walnut/regal moth. Its appearance is a trick; the horns do not sting. Devils are easy for humans to handle. They molt five times, turning bright green on the last molt. Before pupation, a larva expels its guts and changes to turquoise before going underground. Once they become moths, they have small mouths and do not feed, living for about a week. Have you ever had moths eat your stored blankets or clothing?
