We've been asked this question a few times already, but do you know why it is recommended you put winter tires on your car, if you live in a area that has winter weather?

Winter tires gain their advantage not only because they have superior tread patterns that are designed for traction on ice and snow, but because they employ softer rubber compounds to enhance grip. That means when it's cold, whether it's on dry pavement, snow, or slush, it'll outperform In all-seasons. Many people with all-wheel-drive vehicles think they don't need winter tires, and the same goes for areas that don't receive a lot of snow (such as Vancouver, B.C.). This is the reason they are not called "snow" tires any longer, but winter tires. It's all about the braking and traction. Knowing this information, will you be putting winter tires on your car this year?

Winter tires are actually mandatory in certain areas of Canada, including Quebec (between Dec. 1 to March 15), and certain roads in British Columbia (posted on roads), but only recommended in other areas.

In the U.S., there is no overlapping regulation for all its states which mandate you to use winter tires, and the regulations can be different from region to region. It is highly recommended that you use winter tires when you live in the so-called "snow belt".

Besides winter tires, it is also recommended that you carry a winter survival kit in your car in case you are stranded by weather. It should include an Ice scraper, snowbrush and small shovel, plus it is recommended that it includes sand/salt or other traction aid, booster cables, road flares or warning lights, a jug of antifreeze and windshield washer fluid, flashlight and batteries, first aid kit, and a small tool kit. Do you carry such a kit in winter?
