Have you ever heard of Fels-Naptha (which I will abbreviate as F-N for subsequent mentions in this survey), a soap bar-looking laundry product dating from the late 1800's?

I purchased a bar of F-N in a grocery store a while ago without being previously familiar with it. I figured it's a kind of pre-wash. What I didn't know is that it was originally marketed as an ingredient for making homemade detergent before premade powdered and liquid varieties were commercially available. Upon discovering it, were you familiar with the original use of F-N?

Once I got some F-N, I liked it nigh immediately. using it doesn't compare to beating out clothing stains against the rocks on a riverbank or scrubbing them against a washboard (yay!), but there's a certain visceral satisfaction I get from diminishing as a pre-wash or eliminating entirely clothing stains by physically rubbing something on a garment. How do or would you prefer to do that?

What might be a peculiar name for some derives from one of F-N's original ingredients. Naptha, also known as benzene, is an ingredient in coal tar. Would you use Fels-Naptha were it still made with actual naptha?
